Headflix and Deception

“Headflix” is what I call the incredibly addictive movie-making machine in our own head. Most of us are hopelessly subscribed, totally lost in the infinite amount of movies that play up there on a consistent basis. Here we will introduce you to a few tips that help to integrate meditation and entertainment, drama and wisdom. Learn how to kick your feet up, relax and become the detached observer of these deceptive shows.

EPISODE 165: Unsubscribe from Headflix

Headflix – it’s what I call the cinema in our own head. The various movies that tell you how your life was, how it will be and how it’s all going to play out. There are various genres and you’ll be guaranteed a lifetime of entertainment. But what happens when you unsubscribe?

EPISODE 166: Who Watches Mind Movies

The mind plays one movie after another. It talks, tells stories, designs and shapes our perception of this world continuously. Most of us are hopelessly drowning within the incessant flood of mental content. My question this week is: “Who is actually watching these movies? Who believes in all these stories?”

Blog: Headflix & Awareness of Fabrication

Blog - Headflix and Awareness of Fabrication

This article is definitely for those meditators who do enjoy watching movies sometimes. I certainly do! Now, does that make me an inferior and downright unspiritual worlding? Probably! Should we all stop to entertain ourselves and move into a cave? Only if you are a spiritual Superman with Rainbow Ninja Powers – then you may move into a cave 😀 For the rest of us, it’s back to training in the midst of Netflix and Headflix. Let’s see how this fun little practice could be a valuable vehicle for inner transformation.

  1. Hi Toby, thank you for your great talks and videos. I am a little confused lately on the message, like good/bad thoughts and emotions are pretty much the same just thoughts and emotions. Obviously speaking for myself but I assume that most if not all choose a spiritual path like meditation to find a better way than the one they have, to find ‘hope’ that a practice may significantly improve their lives. Your last few talks seem to give a message of resignation, that there is nothing we can do to change what we have as it is already formed. We are somehow stuck with the outcome from what we have learned and the effects of how we were formed in our early lives. Contrasting this to the Buddha teaching of impermanence and other spiritual or motivational paths that give hope that your life can change for the better.

    • Dear Brian,
Many thanks for your message on here and for expressing your feelings. This is good! Rather than reading and resigning or subscribing to our own ideas I would encourage an open communication that helps to clarify points and misconceptions about the path. Let me clarify the first – and crucial – point: Resignation is not the goal at all. I am encouraging to see, to know clearly where we get ourselves stuck. We might for example get stuck on the idea that “the path is about resignation and hopelessness”. But that’s not true. The practice is to clearly see into the various conclusions and fabrications of the mind and see them for what they truly are. Thus we can become free from getting stuck within ourselves, our own head-cinema, so to say 😀
The direct seeing or knowing results in a tremendous sense of freedom and happiness. Not getting stuck anywhere – neither in hope, nor in fear, resignation or activity, pushing or pulling, liking or disliking, indifference or passion, flat, high or low… This is immense freedom – and it is truly beautiful. And to thos who practice sincerely, they will improve greatly with each step on this path. They will become more kind, more compassionate, more free and radiant as they learn to become free from their fixed sense of “this or that”, “me and mine”, “future and past”, “hope and fear”.
Remember that I am exploring facets of the path. My latest videos reflect merely a tiny facet of this path, not the entire path. The facets of motivation, hope and improvement are as vital as all the other aspects. The message is not that we are stuck with our past, the message is to discover that you are not your past. The message is that you can be free and unbound. The massage is that you don’t have to repeat old patterns – you can see through them instead 😉 I hope it’s a bit more clear now. Please don’t resign – Haha 😀
